& UNDERS WIN ASA OF PENNSYLVANIA CLASS “A” FASTPITCH CHAMPIONSHIP
The
Banshee’s Fastpitch Softball 12 & under team based in
Horsham, PA won the Amateur Softball Association of Pennsylvania
Junior Olympic Division 12 & under state championship
in Sunbury, PA. on Saturday June 22, 2002 and Sunday June
23, 2002.
The
Banshee’s accomplished this fete with 5 consecutive wins three
on Saturday and 2 more on Sunday. They opened the tournament
with a 7 to 1 win over the Williamsport, PA Gravediggers.
The Banshee’s opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second
on a triple by Liz Assenmacher followed by a well executed
sacrifice bunt by Courtney Zingle. In the fourth Assenmacher
reached on an error and was plated on another sacrifice bunt
by Sara Michalowski. In the fifth the Banshee’s exploded for
5 runs after Katie Wambolsd reached 1st on a fielder
choice and Merri Morris singled, Sam Issabella picked up 2
RBI’s with a single. Singles by Liz Assenmacher and Courtney
Zingle followed this and the rout was on. Defensively Angel
Bunner was a force in the circle striking out 10 and allowing
no hits.
In
the second game of the tournament the Banshee’s faced the
host team Sunbury, PA. Coke. The Banshee’s won this game 32
to 1.Offensively Katie Wambold was 3 for 3 and Amanda Sadowl
was 4 for 4 at the plate. Also Ali Shepherd and Ashley Kolenda
had multiple hit games and Gia Shepherd hit a bases clearing
double going 5 for 5. Amanda Sadowl pitched great striking
out 7 in three innings and not allowing a hit. The game was
stopped after 3 innings because of the mercy rule. This win
put the Banshee’s in the top seed going into the double elimination
round of the tournament.
The
third game of the tournament started the double elimination
play and the Banshee’s started with another 7 to 0 win over
Williamsport. The Banshee’s scored twice in the first and
second innings and never looked back. Nicole Hannum was 2
for 2 with 2 RBI’s and Ali Shepherd was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s.
Sara Michalowski was strong in the circle striking out 8 and
allowing no hits.
In
the final game of the winners bracket the Banshee’s beat the
North Penn Eclipse 13 to 0. Ashley Kolenda and Nicole Hannum
scored 3 runs each and Maura Agnew was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s.
Liz Assenmacher was 3 for 4 with 2 triples. Angel Bunner picked
up the win on the mound. This put the Banshee’s as the only
team with out a loss in the winner’s bracket and one win away
from the state title.
In
the state championship game the Banshee’s allowed the Bristol;
PA Rising Stars score 3 runs in the top of the first with
a minor case of the jitters. They came roaring back in the
bottom of the third to tie it at 3 to 3. Michalowki started
the third with a single and was replaced by Ashley Kolenda
using the courtesy runner rule. After Ashley Kolenda stole
second and was sacrificed to third by an Angel Bunner bunt,
Nicole Hannum executed a perfect slap bunt scoring Kolenda.
Katie Wambold followed with a slap bunt single setting up
runners at first and second. Sam Issabella sacrificed the
runners to second and third and Liz Assenmacher followed with
a two out single scoring Hannum and Wambold. Bristol picked
up a run in the fifth after Cognigni singled and Cawley tripled
making the score 4 to 3 in favor of Bristol. In the Bottom
of the sixth the Banshee’s scored 3 more times to take a 6
to 4 lead. Zingle started with a triple and was plated by
suicide squeeze executed by Maura Agnew. After Agnew reached
third Michalowki executed a suicide squeeze scoring Agnew.
Kolenda running for Michalowki scored the final run on an
errant pitch. In the top of the seventh for Bristol Bryant
and Cognigni both singled. Cawley hit into a fielder’s choice
when the Banshee’s took the force out at third. Oakes then
sacrificed the runners to second and third with 2 outs. Petraitis
then singled to center scoring Cognigni but when Cawley tried
to score from second the Banshee’s got the out at home on
a nice relay throw. Hannum playing center, fielded the ball
hitting Morris playing shortstop with the relay throw to home
where Sam Issabella catching applied the tag for the final
out and the state championship belonged to the Banshee’s. |

12 & UNDERS WIN NSA OF PENNSYLVANIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
The
Banshee’s Fastpitch Softball team won the NSA of Pennsylvania
State Championship on Saturday July 6, 2002 and Sunday July
7, 2002 in North Penn, PA.
The
Banshee’s went 6 and 0 for the weekend. They started the tournament
with a 9 to 0 win over the Bristol Rising Stars. Amanda Sadowl
shined in the 4 hit shutout picking up 7 strikeouts over 7
innings. Sam Issabella and Ashley Kolenda had multiple hits
for the Banshee’s. Liz Assenmacher picked up 3 RBI’s.
In
the second game the Banshee’s faced off against the BP Allstars
and picked up their second win with an 11 to 2 win. Offensively
Nicole Hannum was a force going 2 for 2 with an RBI and a
run scored. Defensively Ali Sheperd playing right field made
a great play to get the runner at first when the Allstars
were threatening with the bases loaded and 2 outs.
In
the third game the Banshee’s pounded the Eastern Valley Waves
9 to 0 in 4 and a half innings. Gli Shepherd broke the game
open with a bases clearing double picking up 3 RBI’s in the
third inning. Courtney Zingle went 2 for 2 and picked up 2
RBI”s. Defensively Sara Michalowski picked up the win with
a 5 inning shutout allowing just 1 hit and striking out 4.
This win put the Banshee’s as the number 1 seed going into
Sundays single elimination play.
On
Sunday the Banshee’s dominated the Springford Sting in the
quarterfinals with a 9 to 1 win. Offensively Katie Wambold
scored 2 runs and picked up 3 RBI’s and Liz Assenmacher went
2 for 3 with a triple. Maura Agnew chipped in with a 2 for
3 performance at the plate.
In
the semi finals the Banshee’s squeaked by the Allstars with
a 2 to 0 win. The Banshee’s plated 2 runs in the first when
Hannum walked, Wambold singled, and Issabella and Assenmacher
hit back-to-back doubles. This is all the offense Sara Michalowski
needed as she pitched a 3 hit shutout striking out 2 and allowing
no walks.
In
the NSA state championship game the Banshee’s squared off
against the TLC Titans and came out on top by a score of 8
to 2. After trailing by 1 run after the top of the first the
Banshee’s chased 2 home in their half when Assenmacher singled
and Zingle tripled and Agnew followed with a single. The Banshee’s
then added one in the third when Gia Shepherd doubled and
scored on an error. In the third the Banshee’s plated 2 more
after Issabella singled and Zingle doubled picking up her
second RBI and Agnew followed with a single also picking up
her second RBI. The sixth inning the Banshee’s scored 2 more
when Sadowl led off with a single and Michalowski walked Ashley
Kolenda picked up 2 RBI’s with a single. Defensively Amanda
Sadowl went the distance in the circle pitching seven strong
innings allowing just 2 hits while striking out 5.
